What is Laser Gum Contouring?

Gum contouring is simply a procedure in which a doctor removes and shapes a patient's gum tissue. Doctors may suggest the treatment as a solution to either cosmetic concerns and periodontal disease. Although traditionally done with scalpels and sutures, our practice is proud to offer laser gum contouring. Because the laser trims and cauterizes tissue simultaneously, there is no need for sutures. As a result, patients often report a smoother recovery with less discomfort and bleeding.

As a cosmetic service, the procedure is typically recommended for concerns such as:

  • Excessive gum tissue or a "gummy smile"
  • Uneven gum line
  • Short or stubby teeth

However, gum contouring is still a type of surgery. Consequently, it is only suggested as a cosmetic option to patients who are already in overall good oral health. Patients suffering from decay or periodontal disease should receive treatment for these conditions first.

Benefits of Laser Treatment

Scalpels and sutures, while effective tools for contouring, do present a number of drawbacks. Performing the procedure with a laser instead offers a number of advantages, including:

  • Faster recovery
  • Less bleeding
  • Reduced risk for infection
  • More accurate results
  • Minimal swelling and discomfort
  • Less risk for infection or other complications

Overall, laser dentistry supports a more comfortable recovery for patients.

The Gum Contouring Process

In most cases, our doctors can complete a gum contouring procedure in a single, hourlong appointment. Before beginning, Dr. Lee will numb the gums and surrounding tissues with an anesthetic to ensure that you remain comfortable throughout your visit. He can then begin trimming the gum line with a handheld laser, gently reshaping and removing small portions of gum tissue. As the tissue is trimmed, the laser immediately cauterizes the remaining tissue, preventing excessive bleeding or swelling and eliminating the need for sutures.

What to Expect During Recovery

After the procedure is completed, you can return to your normal routine fairly quickly. Even with laser dentistry, however, it is not uncommon for patients to experience some soreness in the first few days. To minimize these side effects, we typically recommend rest for the remainder of the day, over-the-counter pain medication, and temporary elimination of nuts, seeds, chips, or hot and spicy food from your diet.

Laser gum contouring is a reliable, precise option for reshaping your smile.

Although there may be some swelling the following day, patients are usually able to speak, eat, and drink normally. Keeping your teeth and gums clean with gentle, methodical brushing and flossing techniques can help minimize the development of any infection. Most patients recover fully from the procedure in about a week.
